There could be multiple reasons why your thermostat is not turning on. Regardless. Falcon Air Conditioning has been serving Arizona for more than 25 years and is here to help!

For beginners, your thermostat is an automatic device for regulating temperature. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC system) in your home is controlled by the thermostat. If your thermostat isn’t working properly; your air conditioning unit or furnace is likely not functioning properly, either.

Why won’t my thermostat turn on?

1.) When’s the last time you replaced the batteries?

Not all electric thermostats need batteries, but most digital thermostats are powered by AA or AAA batteries. It’s quite common that the reason your thermostat isn’t working is because the batteries are worn out. To replace them all you must do is remove the thermostat cover from the base of the wall. You may need to gently wiggle the thermostat while you’re pulling it off to get the thermostat to come free. Be careful not to pull too hard because this could remove the base from the wall.

2.) Wires on the furnace, heat pump, or thermostat may be loose or detached:

Over time it is possible for wires to loosen over time. A lot of thermostats receive power from the furnace or air handler. If the wire providing 24 volts to the thermostat becomes loose, then you will not have power to the thermostat. We recommend calling a Falcon Air Conditioning professional if this wiring needs to be reconnected. Falcon Air Conditioning Technicians have been professionally trained to reconnect the wiring properly so we can be sure your thermostat and unit are working properly.

3.) One of your breakers may have been tripped:

You may want to check your breaker panel to make sure that nothing has been tripped. If one of the breakers is tripped, it should show an orange line next to the tripped breaker. All you need to do is flip it off and back on. It is important to read the labels on what has been tripped so that you know what is causing the problem. If the breaker trips again we advise calling a Falcon Air Technician to out to find out the root of the problem.

4.) The safety switch may have tripped on your unit:

Units have safety switches built into them to ensure that all the components are working correctly. If something is out of the regular this safety switches will trip and shutdown the unit. Your Falcon Air Technician or your local HVAC expert will need to come out and reset the switches. Make sure that the technician explains to you what has caused the switch to trip and how it can be fixed.

5.) It may be time to get a new thermostat:

A thermostat’s life expectancy will normally be 10+ years. The worst-case scenario is that it may be time to switch your current one out with a new thermostat. Wi-Fi programmable thermostats have made it easy to set the temperature in your house no matter where you are in the world. It allows you to able to pull up an app on your phone or tablet and change the temperature digitally on your device in a matter of seconds.
